Just as doulas exist to welcome people into life through birth, end of life doulas accompany the dying and their loved ones during the final stages of life. The goal of the Ascend of Life Doula program is rooted in the early philosophy of hospice that no one need to die alone and for the dying and their loved ones to be cared for physically and emotionally during life’s critical transitions.
An Ascend of Life Doula is an intensively trained hospice volunteer who can provide non-medical holistic support and comfort to patients and loved ones, including education, guidance, emotional and spiritual care. Doulas build relationships with patients and families, helping them to focus on what’s most important and often assisting in carrying out final wishes.
Doulas can provide:
- Companionship and support
- Deep listening
- Aromatherapy
- Life review
- Vigil planning
- Vigil support
- Bereavement services

Ascend Hospice’s unique end-of-life doula program provides a meaningful volunteer opportunity for those want to make a difference. The program provides comprehensive holistic training to Ascend volunteers who wish to become a part of this special compassionate group. The program provides specialized training and equips the doula with the tools to provide support and guidance to people during their end-of-life journey.
